How To Refinish Wood Veneer Tabletops

A wooden table

With some old-fashioned tools and a little knowledge you will have no problem refinishing your own table top. There is some practice involved but well worth the effort.

The first step in refinishing wood veneer table tops is to remove the old top coat. Use an acid-based cleaner that will prevent future spotting. You don’t want to use any harsh chemical so be sure to test the cleaner on a hidden spot to make sure it won’t harm your wood. Also, if you are refinishing a dining room table use only a small brush and make sure it is clean and dry before you apply another coat.

The Acid Cleaner

After removing the top coat you will notice that there is a dark stain on the wood. Use the acid cleaner again to help remove this stain. You don’t want to damage your wood by using too much water at this point so use the solution sparingly. If you do it will leave a wet feeling on your refinishing wood veneer table top.

The next step is to take out the color stain and clear the stain with the solvent. This will help remove the solvent and any color residue from the previous application. Use a clean cloth to rub off any excess solution and pat the surface dry. Make sure it is completely dry before applying the next coating. This step is optional but helps maintain the color brightness of the original finish.

A Clear Protective Sealer

Once you are done refinishing the wood veneer table top you should apply a clear protective sealer over the entire piece. You can use either the same color or a different one that is slightly lighter. Let this dry thoroughly before buffing it off.

If you are using varnish, make sure that you apply more than the recommended amount. Use a wood finisher or a very fine grit sandpaper to help remove any loose varnish or sealer. Use a clean rag to buff the top to make sure that it is completely even. Finish with a final shine by rubbing some furniture wax along the surface and using an anti slip polish.

An Aluminum Oxide Coating

If you want a more matte finish you can also use an aluminum oxide coating instead of a wood sealer. You can find this in an aerosol spray can at your local hardware store. Just make sure that it is 100% aluminum though to avoid galvanic reaction which will affect the finish.

When refinishing your table, be careful not to leave any streaks or other damage. If you do, you will need to sand the entire table again. Make sure that you wear a dust mask so that you don’t breathe in the dust. If you leave any streaks, you will have to replace the piece before you can refinish it. Once you are finished sanding and finishing you will be left with a beautiful finished product that is rust free. Refinishing wood veneer table tops can be done quite easily and will leave you with a gorgeous-looking piece of furniture that you can use for many years to come.

The Main Reason That They Cost

When choosing wood veneer table top materials you will find that the price of these products are on the higher end. This is due to the amount of work that goes into creating these pieces. They also take time to create as well. The main reason that they cost so much is because there is not as much demand for them, therefore the supply is low and the manufacturers must pass the savings along to you.

When refinishing wood veneer table tops, you will be able to find many great sources online. You can also find sites that offer a lower price than you would find offline. Because the product is so popular and readily available, there are plenty of places where you can get it for a great price. Many times, a retailer will sell out their selection within a short period of time and you can score an amazing table right at your local home improvement store.

Wood veneer table tops are a wonderful choice for any home. They are durable and incredibly attractive. With just a little bit of refinishing and a few hours of your time, you will have a beautiful new piece to add to your decor. This is also a great project to do with the kids.
